The men at the edges are busy with something else. The Accademia describes a composition banked at left by the centurion, his standard shaken by the wind, and at right by soldiers throwing dice for Christ's garments — gambling in the same frame as his death. Behind them a choir of figures caught in light, not named, sketched rapidly.
John says they cast lots rather than cut the coat, woven whole from the top. Cyprian read that seamlessness as the Church, which may not be torn. The men least interested in the death are the ones keeping anything whole.
