About this painting

The Christ Child takes His Mother's milk, the Word who made the world, and already He has turned to greet someone who is no longer here. Cleveland's curators note that His attention seems drawn to something outside the frame, and that He lifts His hand in recognition. The Virgin holds Him on a green cushion and supports her breast with her left hand. A member of Hans Memling's workshop painted this half of a devotional portrait diptych; the other half, once hinged on the right, would have shown its owner at prayer, perhaps a wealthy merchant or clergyman, the museum suggests. It is lost. Only the greeting is left.
