Saint John the Baptist stands barefoot in a tawny coat and holds the Lamb on one arm, pointing to Him with the other hand. A bear climbs a tree, a boar noses among the trunks, and the two men beside him, the Met says, remain unidentified. The Limbourg brothers made this the first of four full-page illuminations before the Mass for the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, three of them added beyond the book's original plan. Below, the text runs in a single column of alternating red and blue ink. The wilderness is full of beasts, and the only one he lifts is the Lamb of God.
