An old man in a black habit leans on his staff, a small bell on it, and lifts a hand toward his guide. The guide is a creature with a man's head and arms on a goat's body, pointing up. The Golden Legend says Saint Anthony, searching the desert for Paul's hermitage, asked the way of a centaur and of a satyr; the Met's commentary says the Limbourg brothers made the two one beast. It had appeared before, in the Très Belles Heures de Notre-Dame, and the Met reads its return as the painters' and the duke's shared delight in strange stories. The saint takes his road from it.
