
Infrared found the dots. MNAC's own conservators looked under the paint of this panel and saw the pricked marks of a stencil — across the shoulders of the tunic, the forearms, the hands, the reed, and faintly in the nose. The museum says no pouncing had ever been documented in a Morales before. So the composition was traced from a cartoon and repeated to order, by the master or by his shop. Devotion, made to demand, and still this quiet.
