A small jug of lilies stands on the step, and the rest of the room is ordinary: a red bed under a green canopy, a bench, tall windows, a book open on a cushion. Gabriel kneels in white with a staff; Our Lady, in blue, turns from her reading with one hand raised; between them hovers the Dove of the Holy Spirit. The Web Gallery of Art explains the setting as medieval custom, a fifteenth-century townhouse rather than a church, and reads the lilies as Mary's virginity. Luke names a city and a virgin espoused to Joseph, and gives no room at all. The whole scene is some twenty centimetres high; the Antwerp museum gives it to Rogier van der Weyden, the Web Gallery to a follower. The book on her cushion stays open.
