About this painting
Luke gives the scene no room: a city, and a virgin espoused to Joseph. Gabriel finds her in the bedroom of a fifteenth-century townhouse, not a church, where a red bed stands under a large canopy. Medieval custom put the angel there; the message arrives in the furniture of an ordinary marriage.
The catalogue reads the jug of lily stems as Mary's virginity — Luke's first word, given an object. All of it fits on a panel twenty centimetres high, which Antwerp gives to Rogier and that catalogue to a follower: 'entirely in the spirit of the master.'
