Jerome sits with his chin on his fist and looks past the open book, and his arms are a wrestler's. The Sanssouci record traces the body to Rubens's Italian borrowings, Michelangelo and the Farnese Hercules; examination reported by ZDF found it painted slimmer first, then broadened. ZDF reads the furrowed brow and the gaze off the page as the strain of translation. An hourglass stands by his pen, vanitas in the museum's reading. Under his foot lies a lion. The National Gallery in London notes that the lion-and-thorn legend belongs more correctly to another hermit saint. The painting, too, went under other painters' names until Christopher Norris gave it back to Rubens in The Burlington Magazine in 1953. The Bible's translator has still not looked back at the page.
