About this painting
The knife names him. No setting, no scene, nothing to read but a face, a hand, a blade: everything rests on the instrument that will skin him. The Golden Legend gives three deaths — crucified, flayed, beheaded; the picture picks the knife.
Longhi published it as Ribera's. The Kress entry finds the bravura Italian, not Spanish: Ribera's manner, an Italian master's hand. It probably came from a set of twelve apostles, one of two like it in the 1882 Hamilton Palace sale. The set came apart; so did the name. El Paso's catalogue says only Circle of Jusepe de Ribera.
