An old man holds a knife against his chest and looks up and away from it. Nothing else is given: a dark brown ground, a pale mantle, a face, a hand, and the blade, the instrument of the martyrdom that will skin him. The Golden Legend sets three accounts of Saint Bartholomew's death side by side, crucified, flayed, beheaded; this one holds only the knife. Longhi published it as the work of Jusepe de Ribera; Fern Rusk Shapley's catalogue for El Paso gives it to the Circle of Jusepe de Ribera, Ribera's manner in another master's hand. It probably belonged to a set of twelve apostles with no surviving commission, and passed through the Dukes of Hamilton to the Hamilton Palace sale of 1882. The set came apart, and the name with it. The knife stayed in his hand.
