About this painting

You could once have felt the jewels. Siena's own description lists what is set into the plaster besides paint — inserts of crystal, of glass, of parchment and of metal leaf, worked in to make the Virgin's court materially real. She is enthroned under a rich canopy as protectress of the city, on the north wall of the room where the government met. A fragmentary inscription recovered in the nineteenth century dates it 1315. Simone came back and reworked it in 1321.
