A saint lies on his back in gold vestments, and the living lean over him. A haloed figure in gold bends close; a friar stands with his hands folded; a young server stands with palms joined and lifts his face; a priest at the left reads from a red book while a boy holds the censer. Michela Becchis, in Treccani's Dizionario Biografico, describes Simone Martini's frescoes for Cardinal Gentile da Montefiore climbing the chapel walls from bottom to top, the whole story of the holy knight told in detail. The Web Gallery of Art's commentary places the Death and the Funeral of Martin on the upper level as the last scenes, and tells them apart by their rooms: bare geometric walls for the dying, a graceful Gothic chapel for the rite. Here the arches are slender and the capitals carved. The server is still looking up.
