Why cover a Franciscan chapel with the life of a French bishop? Assisi answers it directly: the two men were read as twins. Both had been soldiers, both had given their own clothes away to a beggar, both became travelling ambassadors of peace — so to set Martin beside Francis was to say that the Poor Man of Assisi shone just as brightly. Simone painted the cycle in five years for Cardinal Gentile Partino da Montefiore.
